Changes of Healthy Volunteers upon Intake of Portuguese Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Use EVOO daily to actively reduce bad cholesterol and improve glucose management.
This quasi-experimental intervention study focused on the isolated health benefits of consuming a specific Northern Portuguese polyphenol-rich Extra Virgin Olive Oil (NPPR-EVOO) over a period of 100 days in healthy adult volunteers. The research aimed to determine if the oil itself could produce positive clinical changes, independent of overall Mediterranean diet adherence.
The results demonstrated significant improvements in two major risk factors for chronic disease. Following the 100-day intervention, participants showed a marked decrease in serum levels of HbA1c (a long-term marker of blood sugar control) and LDL-c (the so-called "bad cholesterol"). Interestingly, these benefits were observed despite no significant changes in the volunteers' anthropometric measurements (like body fat or waist size).
The study's key conclusion is that the health benefits derived from this polyphenol-rich EVOO are potent enough to directly modulate key metabolic markers, even in individuals who are already healthy and whose overall diet quality did not change to match a strict Mediterranean pattern. This reinforces the role of high-quality EVOO as a functional food that actively contributes to metabolic and cardiovascular protection.
